In this memoir, starting in Illinois in the 1940’s, Ken talks about growing up in a family not in the mainstream of families of that era; an era where television, rock and roll, the Cold War, human rights, the space race and political upheaval were constant front page news. The private lives of families, however, were just that, private. It is hard now to imagine a world without computers, the internet and email. But it existed, and without it, today’s world would not be like it is. And don’t miss the bonus chapter after the end, offered at no extra charge!

Kenny, I'm in tears. Why did we go through childhood thinking we (I) were from the only "broken home". We all covered such pain and yet I loved my childhood in Galesburg. My father left before I was born. I would be with my Girl Scout group in front of the old Osco's Drug Store, and if a man looked at me a little longer than normal, I would wonder if he knew me but I didn't know him. Thank you Kenny for sharing your story, it has flooded my heart with sooooo many memories.Product details

Somewhere Down the River eBook Ken Varnold Reviews
This book brought up long lost memories. It was written with warmth and honesty. It takes a good writer to remind us of the extraordinary in an ordinary life.
So much you can relate to.
This book is an excellent look back in time to the small town of the 50's and 60's and the boy who lived it. I
thoroughly enjoyed the story and the people in it. The writer has painted a picture with each chapter of the life he led. It's a great read.
Ken and I were childhood friends so I remember much of the stories, however, aside from my involvement in a few of the " memories", it is really typical of growing up in small town USA in the late 50's through the 60's.
The author brought me to the place and time in this story. I would like to meet the main character.
I am from the same middle-sized city as the author, so much of the book struck a familiar chord with me. It was fun to read of Ken's life experiences and relive the good old days of my own life there. I think men and women alike would enjoy reading this book...an easy read.
Yes, just get in front of your laptop or take your composition notebook and pen and "open up a vein"; just begin by writing, starting wherever; don't edit your work until you're nearly finished. Brush the critical editor off your shoulder and just begin the flow.
We all have a story to tell and others will want to hear your story; be sure you tell it from your heart as well as your head.
